The Class of 1968 gathered
for their first event of our 35th reunion at Sherlin Lee Kowals Manoa
home. As a CD of the popular tunes of our era played in the background,
compliments of Mr. Tom Moffit, we started the evening hugging, laughing,
and renewing acquaintances.
Catching up on people and
remembering those fun days took us way into the evening. People from the
mainland included: Joanne Tom, who still lives in Boulder and Sandi Asejo
Campos, who now lies in Portland. Joanne caught all of us up on the last
20 years of her life and it was great seeing her again.
Others who joined us were
Wayson Lee, Fran Ho Bellinger, Betsey Hughes Gunderson,
Noraine Sue Ishikawa, Wilma Akamine Ogimi, Ronald Pang,
Earl Ching, Alberta Prestige,
Dan Tom, Carol, Derrick, Darryll and Stella Wong. Everyone enjoyed the
great food, wine, and fellowship into the wee hours of the night.
The following night we moved
the reunion to the Ilikai Hotel and the Maryknoll Annual Alumni Dinner.
This year it was special because they were also honoring Jared Kaufman,
one of our favorite teachers at Maryknoll. We also got to see people from
classes above and below us which was really nice. Joining us at this
dinner was Mary Chun McConnell, Debbie Ng Baptiste, Mike Leach,
Pam Yoon,
and Elaine Peterson. Alvin Leong was in town a few weeks before and missed
the activities but he sent a bottle of wine, which we gave away at the
dinner.
After dinner we headed over
to the Hilton Hawaiian Village to catch Haunani Apoliana, class of 67 and
Olomana. We had a great time listening to the music, which brought back so
many memories. Haunani even dedicated a song to all of us.
The next day, we all headed
out to Makaha to enjoy Elaine Petersons beach house. Those arriving early
got to enjoy a beautiful breakfast seaside. Joining us for the early
morning breakfast was Paulette Brilhante Teves. Later that day we were
joined by Wilma Akamini Ogiri, Earl Ching, Laine Skiendiel, and
classmates spouses, children and grandchildren.
It was a beautiful day and
the water was so inviting with turtles frolicking off the reef. Everyone
enjoyed the picnic lunch. Although there were no formal activities,
everyone just enjoyed talking and catching up with each other. It seems
any strenuous activity other then talking and eating was not on anyones
agenda. We also shared greeting from people who couldnt make it such as
Paul Winters, Jim Stacey, (who missed his first reunion), Sheila
Nakanishi, Louise Harada Middleton, Mackie Chow Jones, and
Darlyne
Matsumoto Egan. They all are hoping to make it to our 40th reunion.
Enjoy the pictures and try
naming everyone. We hope to see you at the 40th reunion in 5 years!
